Sport enthusiasts and cycling lovers in particular will undoubtedly remember him: Marco Giovannetti is a former road cyclist. Professional from 1985 to 1994.
He was born in Lombardy, but resides and has his origins in Tuscany. He performed well in the minor categories, but his most illustrious and thrilling result was undoubtedly his Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 in the team time trial (with Marcello Bartalini, Eros Poli and Claudio Vandelli), a success that lead him to turn professional the following year.
In 1990, he made his mark on the Vuelta de Espana, by defeating the favourite Pedro Delgado.
He finished third in the Giro d'Italia in 1990, eighth and winner of the white medal for the best youngster in 1986, sixth in 1987 and 1988, eighth in 1989 and in 1991, and fourth in 1992 when he also won a stage victory.
A further achievement of note was the tricolour medal that he won in Olbia in 1992 amid fierce competition from his fellow competitors.
He has worn the national blue jersey four times at the Road World Championships and in 1991 he managed to finish the three "Grand Tours" in the same season (eighth in the Giro d'Italia, eighteenth in the Vuelta de Espana and thirteenth in the Tour de France).
